Listen to Light
by Steven Schroeder

The mark of winter
mind is clarity
not cold, blue not white,
an edge of ice in winter
places even when
there is no snow,
sharp enough to open
your body to sky
eyes to light to music
you never suspected
until you stumbled
into it and even then
could never merely hear.
It takes your breath away,
leaves you blinking
when you venture
back into the house.

Having once
seen the sun,
you come back
blind enough
to see music,
listen to light:
there is no need
to wait for Spring.
